My name is Allan Waruhiu; my wife M'Lynn and I and our three kids are moving to Nairobi, Kenya, to plant Mercy Nairobi and set up Mercy House, a transition shelter for homeless women and children in the city. I was born and raised in Kenya, my wife is from Texas, but we met and married in Nairobi. We moved to the states in 2014 for me to attend seminary, and for the past two years, I have been serving on staff at Mercy Charlotte.
Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and has a population of approximately 5M people; Nairobi is the business hub for east and central Africa and has the potential of being a gospel hub in the region. But the city is plagued by the prosperity gospel, most people who would claim to be Christian see Jesus as nothing more than a means to an end. Like a genie that provides all their heart’s desires. This predicament finds its origin in biblical illiteracy.
The Lord has given us a desire to plant a Christ-centered, Bible-believing, Holy Spirit-led church. Our Vision is to see a gospel awakening in Nairobi that is carried to the ends of the earth. We want to win people to Christ, make disciples, and together, become a church. Mercy Nairobi will be a welcoming, growing, going church that points to the surpassing worth of following Jesus. Our mission will be to make disciples for the glory of God and the good of all people.
Because prosperity gospel emphasizes the accumulation of wealth and spending it on self, we desire to counter it by living out the implications of the gospel, and this is where our flagship ministry, Mercy House, comes in. Through this ministry of the church, we will be able to provide safe shelter, rehabilitation, job training and placement for women, and education for the children. Then through these relationships, we will share the gospel and introduce these image bearers to a Savior who sees and knows them.
The harvest is ready in Nairobi, and we are inviting you to join what We believe God will do through Mercy Nairobi and we are inviting you to put your yes on the table and consider joining our launch team.
